About

Anyone can point a camera at something and call it content. We are not anyone. The Documentary Co. exists because too many good stories get buried under bad video. Heritage projects reduced to drone shots and stock music. Community work turned into two-minute LinkedIn posts that nobody watches twice. We have spent 15 years making documentaries that people actually watch - for councils, heritage trusts, charities, and brands across the UK. Screened in cinemas. Used in schools. Embedded in campaigns that changed how organisations talk about what they do. We work with real people in real places, and we let the story do the heavy lifting. If you want something safe and forgettable, there are plenty of people who will take your money for that.If you want something worth watching, talk to us.

Behind the Scenes

FAQ

Can I get a documentary made about my business, charity, or organisation?

We produce short-form and long-form documentary content for organisations, charities, councils, and brands. Our work ranges from five-minute mini-docs to full series. We focus on real stories - heritage, sustainability, community, social enterprise - told through the people at the heart of them.

Can you make a documentary anywhere in the UK?

Yes. We produce documentary content across the UK - from Cornwall to Scotland and everywhere in between.

Do you handle everything from filming to editing and delivery?

Yes. We cover everything from development and pre-production through to filming, post-production, and delivery. We also provide photography, social media content, and derivative cuts for different platforms as part of our packages.

Who films the documentary?

We deliberately build diverse crews. Every project is different, and we match filmmakers to stories based on their interests, expertise, and lived experience - not just their availability. If we are telling a story about a particular community, subject, or environment, we want people behind the camera who understand it, not just people who can operate the kit. Better-informed crews make better documentaries. It is that simple.

Can I use the documentary for my own marketing and social media?

Absolutely. We work with you to agree usage rights upfront. Most of our clients receive full rights to use the content across their own channels, websites, and campaigns. We also offer partnership deals that can significantly reduce the cost of your documentary. If your story aligns with our portfolio goals, we may co-invest in the production - meaning you get broadcast-quality content at a fraction of the usual price. Ask us about it.

Can you make a documentary about a sensitive or difficult subject?

Yes. We have extensive experience working with vulnerable people, sensitive topics, and protected environments - including heritage buildings, conservation sites, community health programmes, and stories involving personal or difficult subject matter. We approach every project with care, discretion, and the appropriate safeguarding measures.

How does the process work if I want a documentary made?

Every project is different, but most follow a similar shape: an initial conversation to understand the story, a development phase where we plan the approach, a production phase where we film, and post-production where we edit and deliver. We keep communication open throughout and give our clients access to the process at every stage.

How much does it cost to get a documentary made?

Less than you think. We are built to be affordable without cutting corners - no bloated crews, no unnecessary overheads, just experienced filmmakers who know how to get the most out of every shoot day. The scope determines the price, and a five-minute documentary is a different proposition to a year-long series. We will always give you a clear, transparent quote before any work begins - no hidden costs, no surprises.

Can I include documentary costs in my funding bid?

Absolutely - and we would encourage it. A lot of funded projects miss the opportunity to build documentary or film content into their budget from the start, and end up scrambling for it later with whatever is left over. We work with organisations right at the beginning - often before funding has even been secured - to help make sure documentary production is costed into the bid properly.A well-made documentary can strengthen a funding application, demonstrate impact to funders, and give your project a legacy that lasts long after the funding cycle ends. If you are writing a bid now and thinking about including documentary content, talk to us early. We will help you get the scope and costs right so nothing gets left on the table.
